  • “Having never watched “101 Dalmatians” as a child, when I sat down see the movie, “Cruella” with my children, I didn’t know what to expect. To say I was blown away, was an understatement. There is something wonderful about watching a movie inspired by the same subject that inspires you. As a designer, I am obsessed with the couture collections of Alexander McQueen and the McQueen references in this movie, flow from one scene to another, inspiring each take, each garment.

    There is a point in the movie, where the character of Estella creates a couture dress created entirely from butterfly pupae; golden in colour, the dress eventually ‘emerges’ as hundreds of fluttering golden wings flying through Estella’s atelier; a scene to behold. This spectacular dress inspired my jewellery from the moment I saw it; in my mind I could create a ring by rotating the ‘cup-shape’ of the dress. I could already imagine setting a unique pearl into this globe shape, a pearl that could rotate around itself inside a golden globe. I designed a geometric pattern, on the outer globe, that could be set with hundreds and hundreds of coloured diamonds.

 

  • Within all of McQueen’s work, beauty was uncomfortable and transgressive, but also transparent and organic. McQueen’s ‘beauty’ was in the fiction and the backstory of his designs but also in the reality; the reality of the body wearing the piece. Beauty was created in the way the body became one with McQueen’s designs.

    The DeVille Ring is an ode to that ideal; beauty in the way the hand, and the client’s personality becomes one with jewellery. Pure art, pure beauty.”
